Katy Perry Electrifies with "E.T." but Spaces Out

katyperry.com
I'm sure of you have hear of Katy Perry's new single "E.T." featuring Kanye West. Love the song! It's been on repeat in my car for a couple weeks now. I should stop before I get sick of it. However, I'm not crazy about the music video. It falls short for me. Perry's got a great story idea when she came up with "E.T." She imagined what it would be like to meet a guy from another planet and what that relationship would be like as opposed to being with a human guy. I love that boundless kind of thinking. The metaphor of having this affair with a foreign lover. It's intriguing. Below is a short interview. She explains better than I can...

The sounds and hard beats combine in this techno, hip hop hit with great. I can't help but open my sunroof and crank up the volume. I'm probably embarrassing myself. Whatever. But, when the video premiere March 31st and I watched it for the first time, I was disappointed. There were a couple good parts, but I felt Perry and her production crew could have be a lot more innovative with the video. They should have done more.

The video opens kinda like the Disney film WALL-E. Have you seen it? It's dark and mysterious with an old-school playing. It pulls you in a lil bit. But, then Kanye West doesnt do much with his stunner shades on when he appears next. For an alien/space/cosmos video, there were clips of animals from Earth and other things on Earth. If this is music video about this futuristic love between a human girl and alien boy, nothing about Earth should be in the video. I didnt like it. The middle of the video, where it pauses a little, was good because we see the introduction between Perry and the alien lover. He seemed more robot/android than alien but I'll let it slide. It was decent. But, then when the video draws to a close, the alien boy turns out to be a guy with albinism. I did NOT like that. I felt the director who worked on this video took the easy route and thought "If we put an albino guy as the alien, that will be unique!" IT WASN'T! I thought it was a cop out and bit insulting if I had albinism. Just being honest.

All in all, great song. I love the storyline. But, the music video was lacking for me, and could have been easily taken up a few notches. I will say that I like the makeup and costume design. P.S. This is a little off topic, but does Katy Perry look a little like Zooey Deschanel? Anyway, hopefully, you guys will take a look at the video and let me know whatcha think.

heyo, lovely blog- found you via 20sb. i actually am one of like 3 people in this country under 30 who have not seen this video so i just watched it and i agree it was very 'meh'.. and i agree also about the albinism thing.. i wonder if there's been any backlash because of that? its definitely an interesting collaboration though and i like the sound. it's crazy how so many artists are now branching into house music- i have been a fan of house for years and i remember getting picked on for it all the time and now it's so hip haha.. but love the blog, can't wait to read more :)

xx, jess
